Our credibility is everything, so we have policies in place that are designed to avoid conflicts of interest.

  • Recusal: Our staff must recuse themselves from stories involving personal relations, financial stakes, or organizational affiliations. If a reasonable person could question our impartiality, our reporters must disclose their concerns to an editor who can then reassign coverage.
  • Political Involvement: Journalists and editors cannot donate to campaigns, political action committees, or partisan causes for the duration of their employment. While voting is private and encouraged, our staff may not sign any petitions for causes that may reasonably be considered partisan; this includes referendum ballot initiatives.
  • Social Media: On social media, reposts without context are not allowed, and neither are endorsements of political candidates or partisan causes.
  • Gifts: We do not accept gifts such as meals, event tickets, or merchandise, with the exception of review materials as they create obligations. If a gift is unavoidable, we will donate it to charity.
  • Expenses: We cover our own costs for travel and coverage to maintain our independence.
