News from and for People in Compton
Hub City Reporter dates back to 2016 when Charles Jackson, born and raised in Compton, desired to create a media platform that gave credit to all the good he saw in his neighborhood. As a Compton native, he grew tired of the constant negative coverage and the lack of collaboration reflected in mainstream media.
When you search for Compton on Google, the first stories are often about death, crime, abuse, or corruption. Hub City Reporter and City Pride Magazine were founded to challenge this narrative. Our mission is clear: to connect the community to the solutions and resources they need to survive, and to portray Compton as the thriving, diverse city it truly is.
Our Vision
We know that changing the narrative of Compton—from the 1960s historical narrative to the current environment of thriving education, wellness, health, and business—requires being on the ground. Compton is diverse, and we are here to ensure that the news reflects the actual lives of the people who live here.
Our Approach to Engagement
Community engagement for Hub City Reporter means building a trust-based relationship with you. We do not believe in reporting news from our newsroom or a desk. We are community-led, and we are led by our Editor-in-Chief, Charles Jackson. Our staff are on the ground meeting residents where they live, work, and play.
We want to understand your needs to guide our reporting and connect you to the information you need. We want to be in tune with what your questions, concerns, and priorities are, so we can base our reporting on your actual needs, not on our assumptions.
Where to Find Us
You can find us in your neighborhood at the following locations and events:
- Compton Community Center (Dollarhide Center): We are tabling here every other Friday. This is a space for you to talk to us, share information, and share tips.
- City Hall: We attend public meetings and city council sessions to stay part of the solutions to the challenges facing Compton.
- Community Events: Look for us at food festivals, parades, sports events, student engagement awards, and public meetings.
What We Are Covering
We are currently focusing on listening to the community on issues that matter most, including:
- Senior Health & Housing: We are asking: what questions do you have, and what questions do you want us to ask your leaders? We want to hear from seniors who are thriving and those who are struggling to stay in their apartments.
- Upcoming Elections: We are meeting with candidates, writing stories, and asking them the objective questions that residents want answered.
- Changing the Narrative: For 20 years, Hub City Reporter has been in Compton to portray the city for what it is—diverse and transitioning. We cover everything from education and wellness to business and legal resources, moving beyond the “chaotic stories” big media covers only when there is a conflict.
