October was College Awareness Month. To recognize this, Compton Unified held its 9th Annual College Fair at Dominguez High School, welcoming almost 400 scholars from its four high schools: Centennial High School, Compton Early College High School, Compton High School, and Dominguez High School.
The scholars were greeted by reps from 36 colleges and universities from California, including Cal State and University of California schools, as well as others from the country, including some HBCUs, with the opportunity to talk to reps from each of the schools and help decide where they want to apply and ultimately go.
In addition, the United States Marine Corps talked to scholars about military opportunities. Diego Delgadillo, a Compton Early College High School senior, was looking at different choices. “I want to go to college. I came here for my future. People who go to college make more money than people who don’t go to college.”
Carlos Lozano, a senior at Centennial High School, was interested in learning more about the different universities: “This was important to see what colleges I want to attend and see what choices I have.”
Many colleges are already accepting student applications, and the deadline to apply is early December, so October is a perfect time to expose the students to their options and encourage them to submit their applications. Compton Unified had an 88% college acceptance rate last year, and it encourages all students to apply to college.
