Vernell’s Journey

First and foremost, I give honor and all the glory to God for sustaining me. I thank and honor all of the service men and women who have served or are currently serving in the United States Armed Forces, defending America, the greatest country in the world.

I have to begin my story by sharing how blessed I was to be born to humble, hardworking, organized, forgiving, welcoming parents who shared a harmonious vision of what they wanted to accomplish in their lives for their families and themselves.

It is especially important to know that my parents and grandparents always stressed the importance of taking care of family and being respectful, kind, and courteous to each other and everyone else. I spent a lot of time in the country with my grandparents on their farm and my parents’ farm.

It is equally important that you know my parents allowed and encouraged my brothers, sisters, and me to explore, ask questions, and challenge ourselves in every aspect of our existence. They expressed and extended this special congenial attitude about themselves to family, extended family, and friends as well.

I was born Vernell Renee’ Hightower in Los Angeles, CA. I attended both public and Catholic schools. I graduated from Washington High School, Los Angeles, and am a proud General Alumnus. My first paying job was at McDonalds at Western Avenue and El Segundo. I have worked as a Record Store Manager, Auction House Assistant Budget Technician, and University of Southern California Data Entry Clerk. I have owned and operated Our Kidz Day Care facility and have other thriving businesses in the Hub City.

I purchased my first home in the City of Compton at age 19 with a 500 dollars down payment and a purchase price of $19,500.   I am no longer married but remain a great business partner with my former husband through our McDaniel, Bragg & Hightower LLC., founded to teach Family Generational Wealth. Since purchasing my first home, I have purchased additional homes in the City of Compton. I have been a City of Compton Employee for over 41 years. I have (3) adult children: Wilshonda, Wilber, and Robert. All three children have served in the United States Army. Two are currently serving with a combined service time of 34 years. I have five grandchildren, and one grandchild will debut in December of this year. I anxiously anticipate the birth of my first great-grandchild in March 2025.

Horses and being a Cowgirl are a way of life for me. This lifestyle includes family first, self-discipline, caring for and respecting nature, my environment, and the people and community where I live and call home.

I serve the City of Compton Community as the people’s City Clerk. I was appointed unanimously by the City Council on January 23, 2023. I remain a dedicated and humble servant who cares deeply for and about the issues that matter the most to our city.
